Flying Patterns

Picture this image with the sounds of loons calling and fish splashing. No noises from humans. They are sleeping. This is the time of the day I love most in Canada.

I took this photo last year and came across it today while searching for something else. I am drawn to this image because I love silhouettes. Enya would be good background music for this image. Thanks goes to Scottseyephotos.wordpress.com for inspiring me to post this today.

Drawing With Your Camera

Who said the camera was for simply clicking? Go ahead open up your lens for awhile. Have some fun. Shake it. Swirl it. Move it in a pattern. Burn a couple of calories. Who knows what you’ll come up with. This was taken with my Canon Rebel. Shutter open for what seemed like forever. A short post, from a very tired artist. Enjoy!

Nature and Design, Abstract Naturalist

Nature and design. A perfect team. Consider all of the amazing things we see from day to day. From the simple shapes to the complex squiggles. It’s all there; design. Patterns from shadows, branches against a sky; it’s still there. But take what you see a step further and truly look into the abstract qualities that can transform simply by changing it’s composition with your eye. This is how I like to explore nature. It’s not just the instant beauty but the unique qualities that can be captured. Something unoticed. A new discovery. For example, this photograph. I stumbled upon an old weathered log on a walk along a riverside beach. I thought it was interesting enough, but no greatness to it. Until I pushed my artist’s eye a little further and zoomed in with my camera lens. Very cool. They look like eyes staring at me. I took it a bit further and used my el cheapo method of macro lens (I have a set of close up lenses from an old camera that I place by hand over my digital camera lens). This gave me greater detail and more character to the image. Almost monster-like, but in a nice non-threatening way. When people ask me “what kind of photography do you do”. I haven’t a clue. I enjoy doing it all. No real focus. Just what catches my eye at the time. I do love nature and design. So here is a term I came up with “Abstract Naturalist”. Nature and design. Finding the beauty beyond what we typically see. Sounds a bit deep. But it could work.

Photograpy: Circles of Sunlight

In my opinion there is nothing more beautiful than watching the sun glisten off water. Especially when there is movement. In this scenario the sun was creating a glare, however the glare was moving with the waves. This pattern of movement was behind a rope with river grass; which was the original subject. The result of sun’s reflection playing on the water was much more fascintating and became more of a surprise when I looked over my photos. The composition became intriguing. Each character in this story have their own uniques quality. Water – soft color blending to become the background. Sunlight – delicate circles dancing. The rope – solid and dependable. The grass – randomness, almost defying the rope and all other elements. There was no post-production effects done for this photograph.

Grammy Got a Sports Car, Lens to Lens 2

Grammy got her sports car she has been wanting. Sunroof and all. I should say my mom. She is impressed with XM radio, I’m impressed with the USB port. I decided to take the opportunity to take some photos with my new cell phone, which unfortunately is not an iPhone (some day). I decided to leave the raindrops. 1. I already looked kind of silly taking photos of headlights. 2. I wanted see if they added to the image, trying to get reflection off the drops. Kind of a tall order to fill with a cell phone.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Hope

Yesterday was an amazing day here in Maryland. I took the opportunity to walk along the severn River at a local beach which is part of Sullivan’s Cove. There is a live bog here, which is vital to filtering out pollutants. I had no intention of doing a Weekly Photo Challenge; being that I was completely stumped about the word “Hope”. After taking photos of a Mallard Couple, I decided to take a walk along the beach. Sadly, my thoughts of nature and it’s beauty became littered, literally with litter. My hope is have people more aware of taking responsibility for their trash. Residents, boaters, visitors need to be aware that it just doesn’t disapear if it lands in the water. We want to enjoy these natural wonders and they are vital to our existence. Wow! There it is…”Hope”! I did pick these items up by the way; with a stick.

Study of Lights: Abstract to Abstract

This Photographic Art piece was a creation from a photography light study I did last month. I took the image further in post production to create a feeling of movement created by vibration. I just thought I would share it. The nice thing about lights, is that when you photograph them they bring in a special color/effect that is oftentimes is difficult to create.

The Rising Sun Among Shadows

An instant inspiration tonight as I was completely lacking creative thought from a long day of web development and bookkeeping. The hallway ceiling light was making wonderful patterns that I just had to take a photo of to share. Then when I brought it into my photo editor my creative wheels started turning. What if the shadows looked like the were on a floor. Since they already resembled the sun’s rays, I decided it would be fun to make it look like a rising sun. actually looking at it again, I also see an eye.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Simple

Simple. It’s funny how a simple compositional idea can inspire you to do something creative.

I took this photo today. We had our first accumulation of snow/ice. A mere 1/2″. The shapes of the ice and the bulb complemented each other even though they come from two different worlds they blend together as if it was only natural. Snow and ice always seems to inspire me to take photography. The world seems serene and untouched during snow. Lines are accented from tree branches. Houses transform themselves into a geometric gallery of art. Sounds are muffled and soft. A world I could just gaze at for an eternity or until my kids starts hitting each other or the dogs bark at a random squirrel.

Metal Art Series, Recycling Photography

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Photography gone wrong was recycled in post production. This was a failed attempt at photographing a reflection off of a metal trash can. But I decided to keep it because the metal image might make an interesting design element in a future project. So, I gave it a shot. The blurry from the original photograph adds to the post production effect and soften the metal. If it’s a natural blur you are using the original colors. If that makes any sense. Naming this series recycled seemed appropriate since it was a trash can. My plan is to print this at about 8X10 for a wall hanging.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Peaceful, While Photoshop Sleeps.

5:45 a.m. Photoshop was resting from a long night of designing. Facing directly East was a beautiful sunrise that I refused to go outside for. I was warm and snug with coffee in my hand. Not a chance! So I decided to an experiment inside. The effect was created by the beveled glass in my front door window. A cheap trick I guess. However, I didn’t get cold. I decided not to do any post production and just leave it as is. I am sharing this because I know there others out there suffering from even colder weather, who may want to give this trick a try. If you do let me know. You can post a link here if you’d like. I’d be interested in seeing it. Since this week’s photo challenge is peaceful, I have dedicated my photography to Sunrises. I have one more to share tomarrow.

Photography: Branching Out

This photograph was taken with close up lenses that used on my old faithful Vivitar Camera. Just for fun I thought I’d give it a try. I Screwed together two close up lenses and held them over my Digital Camera Lens. The idea was to abstract a tree branch so that it would transform itself into an interesting shape. I decided to focus on the center to in order to have the edges of the tree branch distort and become an abstract shape. The sky was a wonderful blue color so I encourage it to become part the background design by trying to find a good compositional balance between sky and branch. Tree branches possess a uniqueness in design that have always intrigued me.

Photography of a Geometric Sunrise, Ocean City Maryland

Photography from inside hotel balcony. The balcony looks over the indoor pool and also out over to the ocean. Some may see these bars as an eye sore, however they have a wonderful geometric design to them. Paired with a sunrise and horizon line it makes for an interesting composition. This photograph was taken at the Princess Royal in Ocean City Maryland during the winter. If you look close enough there is snow out on the beach. A rarity in these parts. An interesting note: the post A Boy’s Desire to Fly, is a snowbank in Ocean City from last year’s snowstorm. We actually drove to the shore to play in the snow. The western part of Maryland only got a dusting, while the Eastern Shore got at least a foot.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch, A Boy’s Desire to Fly

and yet again

So this week’s photo challenge is launch. My son loves leaping and launching. He is a free spirit. I said no, just like the sign in the background. Jumping from a 6 foot snowbank onto snow covered asphalt just confirms this. He landed safely. Often times we should just go for it, and worry later. I admire this. I’m not suggesting jumping from a 6 foot snow bank. Life is too short not to “just go for it” and try. So launch yourself, you may be in for a pleasant surprise at what you can really do and likely get a thrill doing it.

Photography: Water Imitating Art

On the other side is the Kennedy Space Center. The colors made spectacular patterns with the rippling of the water in this photograph.  It was so incredible they looked like a painting. These photographs were taken just across the shore of the Kennedy Space Center, off the Indian River shore, just south of the bridge. I will keep this image in my mind as the day continues to be even busier. Tranquility. Enjoy!
